 Jerrel George, an 18 year-old whose ultimate goal is to be the Director of the BVI Tourist Board, was the winner of a $12,000 scholarship to pursue his studies in travel and tourism management.
On Tuesday morning Chairman of the BVI Chamber of Commerce and Hotel Association (BVICCHA) Dr. Birney Harrigan proudly announced that George was the first BVIslander to win a substantial scholarship to Johnson and Wales University, Unites States.
The Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association Education Foundation, a non-profit organization that assists students to pursue careers in the tourism sector, has contributed $5,000, Johnson and Wales University $5,000 and Virgin Holidays, one of the United Kingdom's leading operators, contributed
According to Dr. Harrigan, after meeting George a few weeks ago, she is convinced of his determination to achieve his goals. She added George should be seen as an example of BVIslanders who qualify to take up top level management positions in the hospitality business.
"He is a focused young man who is going to be a role model for the BVI," Dr Harrigan said.
Upon the completion of his two year studies George expects to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Travel and Tourism Management. He will begin classes in the Fall 2010 semester.

He told reporters that since his family is involved in the customer service business his interest peaked, but he didn't want to burden his parents financially. So he went in search of opportunities to fund his dream.
‘I am appreciative of this because many young people want to further their studies but don't have the resources to do it," he said.
Top on George's agenda is to market the Territory's cultural belief and heritage which is rich and
vibrant. He noted that his passion for this field is endless and is confident he has chosen the correct career path.
